The Director – Public Relations and Internal Communications will oversee the development of key strategic messages for external and internal audiences. The individual will lead the PR strategy including proactive media relations at the national and local levels, agency management and measurement of program impacts. The Director will manage the development of relationships with key national and local media to generate brand awareness and influence public policy in a highly regulated industry. This role has responsibility for Capella’s internal communications strategy and will develop innovative and effective campaigns to drive alignment with organizational goals. This role reports to the Vice President of Public Affairs and Communications and leads a small team of communications and PR professionals. Responsibilities Cultivate and maintain strong media relationships with key national and local media. Develop and oversee a comprehensive consumer media strategy. Serve as a key advisor and consultant for senior leadership on corporate communications and public relations strategy. Advance Capella’s position with relevant constituents, including consumers and influencers. Work with the CEO and other executives to achieve organizational goals as determined by the larger organizational strategic planning process. Resolve public affairs issues and manage crisis communications. Enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences. Manage a team direct and indirect PR and Communication reports. Provide thought leadership related to Capella’s internal communication strategies, campaigns, events, tools, etc. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in relevant field required, Master's/MBA preferred Minimum 7-10 years prior, successful experience in Corporate Affairs, Communications, Media Relations and/or Marketing fields required. Prior experience in developing strategic PR and internal communications plans. Superior written and verbal communication skills. Prior, direct management experience and experience leading and developing teams. Experience managing budgets, developing business case and ROI models to outline budget needs. Well networked and locally connected throughout the community is ideal for this role. Ability to successfully influence strategic direction, resource allocation and tactical execution throughout the company. Strong executive presence and ability to influence without authority. Experience in nimble, fast-paced organizations. Experience developing PR and communications strategy for highly regulated and intangible products and solutions. High sense of urgency and comfort working within ambiguity. Highly adaptable and excited about working in a hands-on, small team environment. Fast learner who identifies how to gain knowledge needed to be successful and identify path to do so. Drawn to solving complex challenges. Job Location Capella University Capella Tower 225 S. 6th St., 9th Floor Minneapolis, MN 55402 This is an on-site position located at Capella’s downtown Minneapolis headquarters. It requires the ability to work in downtown Minneapolis and in a high-rise corporate office setting. Typical of a corporate office setting, Capella’s office space: is designed with an open work space setting and common fluorescent lighting includes frequent co-worker interaction and corresponding noise levels is subject to inside environmental conditions Sedentary work: this role is mainly a sedentary role with frequent sitting and occasional walking and/or standing. this role involves frequent usage of a telephone, PC and standard monitors. this role has minimal lifting requirements, may require exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects Requires minimal (0–10 percent) business travel: may occasionally require travel to on-site Capella events such as Commencement or off-site Capella University leadership meetings as requested and based on business needs. All travel must be pre-approved and arrangements made according to Capella’s policies/procedures. Workhours: the University’s general office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CST.
